Council leader backs government's new definition of anti-Muslim hostility

Cllr Arooj Shah, leader of Odham Council.

Councillor Arooj Shah, leader of Oldham Council, has welcomed the government’s new definition of anti-Muslim hate describing it as an important step forward to protect all regardless of their faith.

The government announced a non-statutory definition of anti-Muslim hostility as part of a wider cohesion strategy which includes violence, harassment, vandelism, intimidation and prejudicial stereotyping.

Ministers described it as a tool for government and organisations to better understand, measure, prevent and address hostility towards Muslims.

The definition is guidance rather than law meaning it has no legal force but is intended to help police, governing bodies and organisations to better identify and respond to those responsible.

Cllr Arooj Shah said: "I welcome the Labour Government’s historic decision to introduce a formal definition of anti-Muslim hatred and hostility.

“For too long, anti-Muslim hatred has been ignored or misunderstood. It harms individuals and families, damages people’s sense of safety, and divides communities that should feel welcoming and secure.

"The numbers are stark; Home Office figures show hate crimes against Muslims are at record levels. With 4,478 offences recorded in the last 12 months, a 20 per cent increase on the year before and making up almost half of all religious hate crimes.

“Having a clear definition matters. It helps institutions recognise this hatred, challenge it and make sure it is taken seriously wherever it appears.

"At a time when global tensions can spill over into our communities at home, it’s more important than ever that we stand for respect, understanding and unity. The strength of our country comes from its diversity. Protecting every community and standing firmly against hatred sends a powerful message about the kind of country we want to be.

"This is an important step towards ensuring everyone in Britain — whatever their faith or background — feels safe, respected and valued."
