Council approves motion to ensure families have access to non-invasive post-mortem services

Councillor Shoab Akhtar.

Oldham Council has unanimously approved a motion to ensure that families in the borough have access to non-invasive post-mortem services, free at the point of need, when authorised by the coroner.

Cllr Shoab Akhtar, from Oldham Group who proposed the motion, said every family deserved to be treated with dignity and respect, especially during their most difficult moments.

He explained: “We're proud to be taking a lead in providing non-invasive post-mortem services, which are not only more humane but also more culturally sensitive. This is a significant step forward in supporting our communities."

The motion highlights that Oldham will work with Rochdale and Bury Councils to procure a shared digital post-mortem service, due to be operational in 2026. The service will be funded through the coronial service budget, ensuring that no family is charged directly.

Key points from the motion include:

Non-Invasive Post-Mortems: The council will provide non-invasive post-mortems, using CT or MRI scanning, which are quicker, more dignified, and culturally sensitive.

Funding: The service will be funded through the coronial service budget, with no cost to families.

Joint Procurement: Oldham, Rochdale, and Bury Councils have jointly agreed to procure the service, ensuring consistent funding and governance.

Public Awareness: The council will work with local faith leaders, funeral directors, and NHS Bereavement Services to publicise the availability of non-invasive post-mortems.

Cllr Akhtar added: "We're committed to ensuring that Oldham Council provides services which are responsive to the needs of our communities.

“This motion is a significant step forward in providing compassionate and dignified support to families during a difficult time."

The council will now work on implementing the motion, with the service expected to be operational in 2026.
