Community litter-pick organised by FCHO hailed a success

The Barker Street Estate was given a clean up this month thanks to an event organised by First Choice Homes Oldham (FCHO).

The housing association joined forces with the council and community group OL1 for litter and fly-tipping removal. 

Three-and-a-half large skips were filled, while Oldham Council also arranged for road sweepers to support the big clean-up. 

There was also engagement with around 120 residents about how to dispose of their rubbish and keep the area clean. 

Those taking part in the clean-up were also treated to food and Mahdlo Youth Zone’s Scran Van – part funded by FCHO – was also there to ensure local children received a meal as part of the event. 

“We want families to feel part of their community and take pride in where they live, and the day was a fantastic example of partnership in action to help achieve that aim,” said FCHO neighbourhood lead Ben Collier. 

“FCHO believes it's everyone's responsibility to help look after the area they live in and there is a litter and fly-tipping issue on the Barker Street estate we want to tackle with the help of residents and other groups. 

“During the day we took the opportunity to speak with residents - many of them our customers - about how to dispose of their rubbish in better ways, while encouraging people to get involved and bring the community together to play their part in shaping where they live.” 

Residents were given advice about anti-social behaviour, including FCHO’s new Respect Line where customers can get can report ASB in their communities.
