Train operator Northern has launched a campaign to show that travelling by train costs less than many everyday purchases.
Many people assume train travel is expensive - but in reality, many off-peak fares are cheaper than the things most people buy without a second thought, including takeaway coffees, meal deals and streaming subscriptions.
A new campaign, launched by train operator Northern, aims to challenge perceptions and inspire more people to enjoy days out, nights with friends and weekend adventures by rail.
As part of the campaign, Northern is hosting a gameshow-inspired ‘Higher or Lower' activity in city centres this week, where members of the public will be invited to guess whether the cost of a Northern train ticket is higher or lower than familiar everyday items.
The events were held in Leeds and Manchester last week, where participants had the chance to win spot prizes, including free travel tickets and other giveaways.
Alex Hornby, Commercial and Customer Director for Northern, said: “There’s a big misunderstanding out there that train travel always comes with a high price tag - and it simply isn’t true. Millions of the tickets we sell every year cost just £5 or less.
"This autumn, we want to show people just how affordable a day out by train can be. Whether it’s exploring a new city, catching up with friends or heading somewhere scenic, many of our tickets cost less than the everyday items we all buy without a second thought.
"We’re looking forward to meeting customers in Manchester and Leeds and surprising a few people along the way.”
Northern is the second largest train operator in the UK, with 2,650 services a day to more than 500 stations across the North of England.
