Car break ins on the rise in Oldham

Police are urging car owners to follow safety advise.

Residents are being urged to be extra vigilant after a rise in theft from motor vehicles across the town.

Police from the Westwood and Coldhurst Neighbourhood Policing Unit stressed that their area suffered the highest break ins.

They said thieves were targeting transit vans in car parks, especially near hospitals, where they were prising the doors open to steal tools and plant equipment.

PCSO Martin Smith said: “Our general advice would be never to leave anything in plain sight, always put your belongings away in the boot or even better take them with you when practicable.

“Double check your vehicle is locked and left ideally in a busy place and not a secluded area where thieves can just take their time and not be worried about getting caught.

“Remember all car owners are at risk, however leaving bags, coats and laptops and other valuables on your car seat just increases the attraction to thieves and your vehicle will get broken into if you don’t hide your contents away.”
