We were the champions

The sun was shining in July 1999 for Tameside secondary schools’ athletics championships with several outstanding performances.

Competition was keen throughout the day with as many as 700 young people from across the borough giving their ‘all’ in the track and field events.

Sponsored by the Tameside Reporter, the keenly contested championships  took place at the Richmond Street athletics track in Ashton. The overall winners were Longdendale School (girls section) and Audenshaw School (boys).

West Hill School PE teacher Tony Campbell who organised the day said: “It was a wonderful day for all concerned. There were some notable efforts - Anthony Lowe’s 400m time of 54.1 seconds was outstanding,  Lee O’Connor’s time in the 200m was very quick and Lee Simms and Matthew Tullett were awesome in the triple jump.”

Candice Swann is pictured above from All Saints RC High School, Dukinfield, who was the winner of the under-13s 1500m race.
