TV tie-breaker a heartbreaker

A ‘tangle over a tie’ cost a Gee Cross couple £600 in prize money on a top TV show  - but Reginald and Constance Green were not losing any sleep over “what might have been...”

Despite coming agonisingly close to scooping the jackpot, they told the North Cheshire Herald that being invited to Border TV in Carlisle to take part in ‘Mr and Mrs’ was enough of a reward.

After correctly replying to five questions about each other, the top prize was just one right answer away.

“Derek Batey, the question master asked me what Reginald would do if I bought him a really horrible tie,” said Constance.

She opted for “put it in a drawer” but when the same question was put to Reginald,  he said he would take it back to the shop.

Married for 55 years, the couple had taken part in a stage version of ‘Mr and Mrs’ in Llandudno the previous summer.

“Derek Batey said he would like us to go on the TV show,” Reginald told our reporter.

“We went to the recording in January. They put us up in a hotel for the night and generally made sure we had a good time.”

The couple did not return home empty-handed, winning a carriage clock and £70.
