Traction attraction

Nostalgia reader Bernard Wilson was keen to put us back on track after spotting the picture of this enormous traction engine featured on our nostalgia page last week.

The engine appeared at a Glossop transport show in the 1970s and was depicted as one used by Olive & Partington’s, paper makers of Glossop.

However, Bernard points out that the engine is, in fact, a Burrel Road steam engine used for heavy haulage, and not a Fowler “Tiger Tractor” type which were used to haul logs to the paper mill in Charlestown.

Bernard tells us: “The last remaining engine (of four) now belongs to David and Sue Cope of Cromford, Derbyshire, and is in fine working order, having been restored over many years of hard work to exhibition standard.

“It still appears at many steam rallies and is the subject of a series of scale models which I’ve been working on since 2006 when I retired.”

Which is good to hear and thank you for keeping us informed, Bernard.
