WINNERS: Candid Camera man Bill Kellie and 'Rave' girl Margaret Corlett with, from left, Jean, David and Terrence.
Schoolboy David Allen of Hobart Street, Gorton, took time off from his A Level studies to win the 16th heat of the ‘Rave’ Disc Jockey of the Year contest at Belle Vue’s Elizabethan Ballroom.
David, 18, studying at Cheadle Hulme School and hoping to become an art and French teacher, told our reporter he disagreed with the view of many parents and academics that beat music and schoolwork were incompatible.
Runners-up were Terrence Scargill, also 18, of Froxmer Street, Gorton (second) and 16-year-old Jean Shackleton, of Manor Road, Haughton Green (third). Terrence was a salesman and Jean - the only girl in the contest - made envelopes and writing pads at Newton Mill, Hyde.
Compere Bill Kellie from the popular ITV show Candid Camera presented the trio with LP record and gift voucher prizes.
They could also look forward to an all expenses-paid trip to the Top Rank Suite in London for the national final. The winner would be announced by top DJ Jimmy Young on his Radio Luxembourg show.
