Thousands see The Bachelors

Extra police were called out to Hyde town centre to control a crowd of 2,000 eager fans waiting to see Irish singing stars The Bachelors officially open the new White and Swales record store on the Market Square.

The crowd of mainly young people clutching autograph books parted soon after 11am to let the hit trio - brothers Con and Dec Cluskey and John Stokes - through.

Waiting inside to greet them was 20-year-old Keith Butterworth of Northrop Street, Hyde.

An avid fan of The Bachelors, he had sadly been unable to attend their shows as he had been confined to a wheelchair due to a spinal condition.

The trio - whose string of ‘60s hits included Charmaine, The Sound of Silence and their No.1 Diane - autographed an LP for Keith and chatted with him for several minutes.

Then, with the group safely installed behind the counter, the queueing fans were allowed to enter in relays. For the shop staff, it was a memorable first day.
