School netballers unbeatable to crown season on top of the tree

Two Trees High School was rapidly becoming a centre of sporting excellence - and as the Denton Reporter observed, it was the girls rather than the boys who were making all the running.

Whether in athletics, cross country or rounders, one success had rapidly followed another, but in netball the Two Trees girls were simply the best. The senior team dominated the Tameside championships ending the season unbeaten.

Their achievement came as no surprise to team coach Miss Antrobus who had proudly built a “skilful, fast and dedicated team” over the previous five years.

The 15 and 16-year-olds were determined to top off their outstanding season by winning the annual Tameside  tournament, hosted in 1988 by Denton’s St Thomas More High School.

With four wins including a runaway 12-1 victory over Hattersley, Two Trees made it through to the final.

Once there they beat Longdendale 2-0 to claim the coveted trophy.
