Raise a glass at the 'Lowry' Pub

The one-time President Pub on John Kennedy Road, Mottram, was losing its American connection.

It was named after the late USA president John Kennedy, but in 1979, it was going more local.

Owners Lanchester Taverns had named it the Flat Cap in honour of world-famous artist L. S. Lowry who lived in Mottram for the last few years of his life.

It was not the only the name that would change. Lanchester were aiming ‘at something more old-world Greater Manchester’.

That meant a pub that was cosy and comfortable with and an old-fashioned black-leaded fire grate.

It happened and locals loved it, as it reminded them of the pubs and inns where they lived before moving from Gorton and Openshaw to North Cheshire.
