One of Tameside’s most famous sons was officially honoured by the borough with a civic reception in his home town.

Ricky Hatton was met with rapturous applause as he arrived at Hyde Town Hall -  the Hattersley lad who had fought his way to the top as a light welterweight world champion boxer.

The new Mayor of Tameside Cllr Jackie Lane, council leader Roy Oldham and other local councillors were there to welcome him, together with Ricky’s family, local schoolchildren and a host of media representatives.

Since winning the British light welterweight title in 2000 and going on to achieve international glory the following year, Ricky had successfully defended his world title a record 15 times.

“There’s no prouder moment for me than to bring my IBF belt back to Hyde,” he said.

The mayor paid tribute to Ricky - not only his outstanding sporting achievements but also the unswerving loyalty he had shown to the local area.

“I want to thank you for all you have done for Tameside, your country and your community - you are a great ambassador. You’ve put Hyde back on the map for all the right reasons.”
