Newlyweds gallop from vows to show

Getting married was all in a day’s work for 1972 newly weds John Gleave and Barbara Bertinshaw.

No sooner had they tied the knot at Hyde Registry Office, the couple galloped off to Mottram Agricultural Show, hoping to see their Welsh mountain pony Lennel Fife among the winners.

John, 28, from Hattersley was a stock clerk and chief riding instructor with Glossop and District Pony Club. Barbara, 28, from Heaton Moor, a data control clerk, was also a riding instructor. Their new home together was in High Croft Avenue, Stalybridge.

“We fitted the wedding in with our other arrangements,” said John.
