Hyde Town Hall was packed for a ‘Midday Prom’ concert recorded by the BBC Northern Orchestra.
Broadcast in September 1966, the programme opened with Haydn’s Symphony no.85 followed by Ravel’s lively Mother Goose Suite.
Conductor Meredith Davies defied convention by appearing in a smart white tuxedo and red bow tie. Reginald Stead led the orchestra and the soloist in Bach’s Suite for Flute and Strings was James Galway.
The concert was introduced by BBC presenter Sandra Chalmers who mentioned her family connections with Hyde.
The North Cheshire Herald reported: “In the audience there was a fair sprinkling of teenagers, proving that for many youngsters, musical appreciation goes a little further than The Beatles and The Troggs.”
