The Chronicle reporter was obviously impressed and moved by what he saw, writing: “The roses were not as bright as in recent years, but the marigolds, geraniums and dahlias presented a shimmering mass of colours under cloudless blue skies.”
A band played, people prayed and remembered those who had fought and, in many cases, died, in the two world wars.
The service took place in the summer of 1950 and there were many former soldiers, sailors and airmen in the gathering, to whom the act of remembrance held many poignant memories.
In a speech of Remembrance, those attending were reminded they could only be there because of the freedom and justice that had been won by those who had given their lives and that they should never forget the cause for which so many had paid the ultimate sacrifice.
