Chaos was the was the word used by the Chronicle as road safety signs in Glossop town centre caused mass confusion.
They went up on both sides of High Street West with the aim of showing drivers which side parking was allowed and for how long.
Before they arrived in August 1950, waiting was allowed anywhere and there was no time limit.
Councillors however claimed it narrowed the street causing congestion as cars, buses and trucks heading to and from the Snake passed for space.
The signs had moveable metal flaps which were flipped over every morning showing which side parking was allowed between 8am and 5pm.
The problem was no one told parkers with offenders hastily moved on by the police.
According to the Chronicle, most simply drove into side streets where there were no restrictions, and parked on both sides of the road.
So, until everyone got used to the signs, confusion continued.
