‘Half a ‘tache means lots of cash’ was the Ashton Reporter’s front page headline in July 1985 as teacher Adrian Cathcart agreed to undergo a very public close shave for Live Aid.
Cheered on by pupils and staff at West End High School’s end of term assembly, Mr Cathcart paled visibly as head John Cousil approached him with a cut-throat razor - a ‘hairy’ moment in every sense.
The religious education teacher had volunteered to lose half his moustache if pupils managed to raise a minimum of £250 for Live Aid.
The challenge spurred them on - digging deep into their pocket money they managed to top the target - by more than a whisker.
With £370 collected, the scene was set for a ceremonial shaving in front of the whole school.
It inspired deputy head Roy Milroy surrendered his own moustache, taking the total to £400.
