Ashton student Marie Holland was one of ten finalists in a charity challenge organised by Habitat stores in 1988.

Design students throughout the country were asked to create a range of co-ordinated designs to be used on ceramics, fabrics, giftware and stationery.

Marie, (pictured) of Waddicor Avenue, studying graphic design at Stockport College, created an abstract design called ‘Metropolis’ based on architectural details and printed in black and white.

If she went on to the win the competition, Marie would receive £500 and her designs would be manufactured and sold in Habitat stores.

She would also have the opportunity of a work placement with the Conran Design Group.

The challenge was launched by Sir Terence Conran in aid of the NSPCC with ten per cent of the profit from each item sold going to the charity.
