Pupils and staff at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, Dukinfield were keen to ‘do their bit’ to Make Poverty History - the global campaign urging the G8 nations to cancel the debt of the world’s poorest countries.
They wore white wristbands and made a giant band to wrap around the front of the school on Cheetham Hill Road. Headteacher Pat Blake said: “The children really took the issue to heart and wanted to make a big statement.”
All age groups worked on the project, which touched on several aspects of the school curriculum, with the pupils being encouraged to browse UNICEF and G8 websites to learn more about the subject.
“We looked at the causes of poverty and ways to combat child poverty in particular.”
The pupils had written to the leaders of countries attending the G8 summit to highlight the devastating statistic of 100 million children in the world without schools or education. During the school year they had also fundraised for charities supporting children in Third World countries and the UK.
Elsewhere 600 students and staff at St Thomas More High School, Denton, wore white and circled around the school field in a symbolic act of unity which was clearly visible to passengers on aircraft making their final approach to land at Manchester Airport.
