Youngster's mission to spread winter warmth

A local family is spreading warmth and kindness this festive season thanks to the dedication of a young girl determined to help those most in need.

Eight-year-old Arianna Hendry, supported by her family, has been making Christmas decorations since as early as June, with the aim of raising money to support homeless people. The idea was sparked after a tree was felled at the family home during the summer. 

“Instead of letting the wood go to waste, Arianna saw an opportunity to turn it into something meaningful” said her mum Dawn. “That’s when the idea was born.” 

Arianna’s 11-year-old brother, Alphin, helped by chopping the wood using a handsaw, while Arianna set about decorating the handmade pieces. Since then, she has worked tirelessly, transforming the wood into festive decorations to sell at local Christmas fairs. 

For the past 33 years, the family has made it a tradition to buy hats, scarves and gloves, wrap them up, and give them out to people experiencing homelessness at Christmas time. Sadly, Dawn says they always run out. “This year, Arianna wanted to make sure we didn’t” she explained. “By selling her decorations, she’s helping us raise enough money so that no one is left without something warm.” 

Such is Arianna’s commitment that she has even given up treats other children look forward to. “She missed the chance to go and watch Wicked 2 so she could stay home making decorations,” Dawn said. “She never complained - she's just so passionate about helping.” 

The project has taken on even deeper meaning following a difficult year for Arianna. She has faced challenges at school and has also been coping with the loss of her Auntie Felicia, her godmother, who passed away earlier this year. “Despite everything she’s been through, she still shines bright” said proud mum Dawn. “Our family motto is to fill the world with love and light, and that’s exactly what Ari is doing.” 

Dawn hopes that by sharing Arianna’s story, others will be inspired to spread kindness in their own way this Christmas. “If her story encourages even one more person to help someone else, then she’s done what she set out to do,” she said.
