Warmth and wellbeing at The Attic Studio

Rachael Vincent, founder of The Attic Studio.

A peaceful space above the bustle of Glossop town centre is helping people slow down, switch off and discover the importance of wellbeing.

The Attic Studio, which opened at the beginning of 2024, was created by Rachael Vincent, a former primary school teacher who turned to yoga during a difficult time in her life and found it so transformative she wanted to share it with others.

“Losing both my parents to cancer in a short space of time, made me stop and think about how I wanted to live my life” she shared. “Yoga helped me cope, so I trained as a yoga teacher at first just for myself. Then I realised I wanted to create a space where other people could feel that same sense of calm.”

That vision became The Attic Studio - a warm and welcoming space offering a wide range of classes designed to help people build strength, improve mobility and relax their minds, whether they are complete beginners or more advanced.

Most sessions take place in a heated studio, something that makes the space unique locally. “When the body is warm, stretching feels easier and you can relax more deeply” Rachael explained. “People love the heated classes. We offer different styles of yoga, barre fitness, strength sessions and even heated kettlebell workouts, so there really is something for everyone.”

The timetable has recently expanded to include more teachers and more styles of movement, with the aim of creating a place where people can pause from busy lives and focus on their wellbeing. “We believe movement should feel welcoming and supportive,” said Rachael. “It’s not about what it looks like - it’s about how it feels. We always offer options in class so people can work at their own pace.”

Rachael’s background in education also means the studio offers family-friendly sessions, including toddler classes and special holiday events where children can enjoy yoga alongside crafts and activities. “We want it to be a space for everybody” she said. “People often come on their own, but they leave having met new friends. It’s become a real community.”

Members regularly describe the studio as ‘a sanctuary’, with one saying it feels welcoming “regardless of age, body shape or experience.”

This summer, Rachael is taking the idea of stepping away from daily life even further with an Attic Studio Retreat in Eyam from 10th to 13th July.

Held in a Georgian Manor House, the weekend will include yoga, country walks, shared meals and time to rest and recharge. “It’s an extended version of what we offer in class” she said. “A chance to take yourself away from the daily grind for a weekend of self-care.”

Only a few places remain on the retreat, and Rachael says the response so far shows how much people value the chance to slow down. “Wellbeing isn’t a luxury - it’s essential. Sometimes you just need an hour to yourself… and sometimes you need a whole weekend.”
