Volunteers needed as demand for free food support grows

The Second Helpings Project CIC is calling for volunteer drivers and cooks as it continues to expand its community food support service.

The Glossop based group helps deliver free food packages to people who need them. The organisation says it is looking for practical support in both transport and kitchen roles to keep packages moving from surplus food to households across the local area.

People wanting to use the service are asked to get in touch first. The Second Helpings Project CIC sends out a short form to understand individual needs and circumstances, including allergies and available cooking facilities. Once the team reviews the information, they will confirm whether they can meet the request and then arrange collection or delivery.

Collection is available on Thursdays from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, with delivery also possible for a small fee. Founder, Beth Fitton says "most of the food provided is frozen, so recipients need access to a freezer and should be able to store the food promptly to keep it safe and in good condition."

"It aims to be inclusive, but cannot always meet every requirement immediately because it depends on surplus food availability and current capacity. If suitable food is not available straight away, people can be placed on a waiting list and considered again when appropriate food becomes available as the project grows."
