Since its official reopening in May, Gamesley Community Centre has flourished into a vibrant hub for the local community, offering an impressive range of activities for all ages.
From health and wellbeing sessions to sports, digital workshops, arts classes, and support from professional services, the centre has become a focal point for residents. Now, there’s yet another reason to visit: the arrival of a brand-new Twig Coffee shop.
Twig Coffee is no stranger to the area, already running successful shops in Glossop, Hadfield, and Chapel-en-le-Frith. Founder Mike Ball, who started the business with his friend Lee 12 years ago, shared the story behind the local chain:
“I wasn’t sure what to do career-wise at the time, and we didn’t know much about coffee at all! I saw that the old ticket office at Glossop Train Station was available and thought a coffee shop would be perfect. We spent 12 months researching the industry and developing our own blend, working closely with a local roastery and trademarking it. It worked and 18 months later we opened in Hadfield, and we’ve since grown to four shops. We are so appreciative of our loyal customers.”
Mike said the decision to open in Gamesley came following a request from Helen Thornhill, manager of the community centre:
“Helen invited us to come and look at the space, and as soon as I saw it, I thought it was amazing. Gamesley is a great community, and everyone has been so supportive since we announced our opening here. We’re excited to offer a Twig Coffee to the local community and look forward to expanding our menu and using the kitchen fully.”
Helen Thornhill explained why Twig was the perfect fit for the centre:
“I’ve always wanted the centre to give the community all the services it deserves. I wanted it to be a hub – a desirable place where people want to meet and spend time together. Twig has high standards, a diverse menu and affordable options, giving people a really nice space to enjoy. Families can come together, children can do their homework here with our free Wi-Fi, and now the football club is back here, fans can pop in on match days. Mike is very community-minded and even employs local people, which is fantastic.”
The addition of Twig really does complement the already expansive timetable of activities, enhancing the centre’s role as a true community hub. Helen also revealed that they hope to add a mini-play area so parents and carers can bring little ones whilst enjoying a coffee and socialising.
Mike shared a little about the name behind the brand: “It was my wife Nicola who came up with it. We wanted something simple that people could use in conversation, like, ‘Should we go for a…’ and Twig just felt right!”
And when asked about his personal favourite coffee? Mike laughed: “We have some fabulous flavours, but I’m a purist - it’s got to be a straight black for me!”
Looking ahead, Mike said he’s open to expansion, but wants to remain local and hands-on: “I want to ensure every Twig maintains the same high standards. We’re open to opportunities, but staying local lets me oversee everything personally and keep our quality consistent.”
Open seven days a week from 8.30am to 5pm, Twig Coffee offers the full range of its signature menu, including expertly crafted coffees, a variety of teas and hot chocolate, and superfood lattes for those looking for a coffee alternative. Visitors can also enjoy freshly made sandwiches, paninis, cakes, and pastries, with inclusive options to suit all dietary needs. The cafe is also dog-friendly, welcoming four-legged visitors alongside their owners.
With a welcoming atmosphere, a commitment to the community and a menu designed for everyone, Twig Coffee at Gamesley Community Centre is set to become a favourite spot for locals.
