The Power of fit20: Strength changes everything

fit20 Glossop owner Kate Thorpe.

The owner of a new Glossop fitness studio, fit20, shares her personal journey and passion for the innovative training programme.

Born and bred in Glossop, Kate Thorpe has spent much of her life helping others. For 20 years she worked as a solicitor, a career that was rewarding, but took a heavy toll on her mental and physical health. “I experienced a lot of anxiety and difficulties throughout that time” Kate recalls. “It culminated in me finally realising that I needed some mental health support.”

Her personal journey of self-care eventually led her to a transformative career shift. Drawn to the idea of helping people in a more personal way, she had a “light bulb moment”... why not become a therapist herself? She embarked on training and now runs a successful therapy practice.

Kate’s commitment to mental health naturally extended to her physical wellbeing, though for her, the “healthy body” part had always been a struggle. By the time she turned 50, a routine health check revealed a stark reality: she was four stones overweight, pre-diabetic, with high cholesterol and blood pressure. “Something had to change” she says. That change came in the form of fit20 - a unique fitness concept originating in the Netherlands, which offers highly efficient, 20-minute, one-to-one or one-to-two training sessions.

“I hate gyms” Kate admits. “I’ve tried them and paid for personal training, but it wasn’t sustainable. Running isn’t for me, and repetitive high-impact exercise can be tough on joints, especially as we get older. fit20 was different - it worked and it was manageable.”

Kate first joined a fit20 studio in Stocksbridge and quickly experienced remarkable results. “After about 18 months, my cholesterol was healthy, I’d lost nearly four stones, and my blood pressure was normal. I had never found a fitness programme that actually did what it said it would do and that I could sustain.” This remarkable transformation inspired her to bring the concept home to Glossop, opening the studio on the High Street in January 2026.

Beyond her own fitness journey, Kate has faced significant personal challenges, including caring for her mother after she was diagnosed with dementia. “The stamina I gained from my weekly 20-minute sessions gave me both the physical and mental strength I needed to manage that difficult period” she reflects. Through fit20, Kate discovered not just weight loss, but body confidence and a joy in movement she had never experienced before - and now she loves sharing that with others.

The fit20 philosophy is simple yet powerful: strength changes everything. Each session is designed to deliver a full-body workout in just 20 minutes, targeting all major muscle groups safely and effectively. Kate ensures that all her personal trainers are fully trained, with comprehensive practical and theoretical knowledge, so members can trust that they are supported every step of the way. Machines and exercises are adapted to individual needs, whether someone is managing arthritis, recovering from surgery or just starting out. “Our goal is for people to walk out of here feeling stronger and healthier than when they came in” she explains.

What sets fit20 apart is its accessibility. Sessions are private, quiet and distraction-free, appealing to those over 40 who may feel hesitant to step into a traditional gym. Members can come dressed in their normal clothes - no need to shower afterward - and enjoy one-on-one guidance, making fitness feel safe, achievable and enjoyable. “Age is not a barrier, and fear is not an obstacle” Kate emphasizes.

Kate’s enthusiasm is obvious and infectious. Her studio already supports a wide range of members, including several clients in their 70s. Many notice improved posture, energy and mobility within weeks. Others find that the strength they gain helps with everyday life - from carrying shopping bags to keeping up with an energetic spouse on a dog walk. “It’s only 20 minutes, but it’s truly life-changing” Kate says.

Beyond fitness, Kate brings her experience as a therapist to her studio. She understands the mental and emotional hurdles that can accompany physical change and creates a supportive, trusting environment. Her own journey - from anxiety, health struggles and caregiving to transformation and empowerment - serves as a powerful example for her members.

Looking ahead, Kate plans to expand her team to meet growing demand. For her, the mission is clear: to help Glossop residents experience the same life-changing benefits that have transformed her own life. “Strength changes everything” she says. “Physically, mentally, emotionally - with fit20 we can thrive.”
