Step back in time with GLAS !

The Glossop and Longdendale Archaeological Society (GLAS) are inviting people to a fascinating talk on the 1648 Battle of Winwick, the last battle of the Second English Civil War.

The event takes place on Tuesday 14th April at 7:30 pm in the function room of the Bluebell Wood pub, Gamesley.

Paul Beckmann, a member of GLAS, will outline the events leading up to the battle, the battle itself, and the ongoing archaeology at the recently registered battlefield. The Battle of Winwick, also known as the Battle of Red Bank, saw a Scots Royalist army under Lieutenant General William Baillie clash with a Parliamentarian force commanded by Lieutenant General Oliver Cromwell. The Royalists were decisively defeated, with their infantry either killed or captured, while their mounted forces surrendered five days later.

Visitors are welcome to attend, with a small admission charge of £2.50.

GLAS, formed in June 2006, is a voluntary association that has quietly contributed to preserving and exploring local history for many years. Members have taken part in practical archaeology projects across the High Peak, including the Mellor Iron Age Settlement & Melandra Roman Fort.

The society works to identify sites of historical importance and protect them before they are endangered or lost, while sharing knowledge for education and local appreciation and work closely with archaeologists across the region and beyond."

Membership is open to anyone over 18. No previous experience is necessary and there is a small membership fee.
