Samaritans of Buxton and High Peak is appealing for compassionate local people to join its team of volunteers and help provide a listening ear to those struggling to cope.
The charity, which offers confidential emotional support 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, says every 10 seconds a call for help is answered by a Samaritans volunteer. Suicidal feelings are expressed in around one in four calls, and someone dies by suicide every 90 minutes.
For many callers, reaching out to Samaritans is the first opportunity they have had to talk openly about how they are feeling. Some have no one else to turn to, while others may have supportive family and friends but feel unable to discuss their deepest worries for fear of upsetting those closest to them.
Rather than offering advice or trying to solve problems, Samaritans volunteers provide a safe, non-judgemental space where callers can talk freely and feel heard.
The charity says it is looking for people who are empathetic, open-minded and good listeners. No previous experience is required, as full training, mentoring and ongoing support is provided.
Angie Mellor, Director of Buxton and High Peak Samaritans, said: "Please join our team and help people change their lives for the better. We will train, mentor and support you all the way."
She added: "We take our volunteering very seriously, but we also provide opportunities for social activities and fun. We are a friendly bunch."
Volunteer and Recruitment Team Leader John Harris has been with the charity for two years and says the experience has been hugely rewarding.
He said: "I've been a listening volunteer for two years and have found the role immensely rewarding."
Anyone interested in volunteering can apply through the Samaritans website (samaritans.org/volunteer) or email buxton.branchrecruitment@samaritans.org to arrange an informal chat about the role.
