If anyone still believes amateur theatre has limits, Frosted at New Mills Art Theatre blows that notion clean out of the water.
Presented by Friends of New Mills Art Theatre in collaboration with New Mills Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society, this dazzling pantomime, based on the much-loved film Frozen, was nothing short of a full-scale professional production.
Directed by Kim Cooper, Frosted was a triumph from curtain-up to final bows. From the moment the lights rose, it was clear this was no ordinary pantomime. The production values were exceptional: the set design was visually stunning and imaginative, while the costumes were simply breathtaking - an easy 10/10, bursting with colour, sparkle and theatrical flair.
The cast delivered outstanding performances across the board. Every role was played with confidence, charm and infectious energy, making it impossible to single out anyone who wasn’t on top form. That said, Dame Florrie, Frosty and Prince Anders were particular highlights, keeping the audience in fits of laughter throughout and perfectly capturing the heart of panto comedy.
Vocally, the show was a revelation. The singing was the best I have heard in a local production, with powerful solos and beautifully blended ensemble numbers. Adding to this was the live band, whose performance was a fantastic touch. A particular stand out performance for me was when Grace Tildsley, who plays Princess Ella, sang Defying Gravity in which she hit every note perfectly.
What truly set Frosted apart was how completely it transcended its “amateur” label. The quality of performance, direction, music and design meant that, at times, it was easy to forget this wasn’t a professional touring production. It was slick, confident and utterly absorbing.
Frosted is on at New Mills theatre: Saturday 31 January, Sunday 1February and Saturday 7 February at 2.15pm plus Friday 6 February and Saturday 7 February at 7.15pm.
