Residents are being urged to register their vehicles to use Glossop Household Waste Recycling Centre as soon as possible, as new enforcement data could play a key role in deciding the site's future.
From Monday 6th July, Glossop tip will become the first in Derbyshire to enforce a residents-only access scheme using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras.
Anyone wishing to use the site must register their vehicle in advance to prove they live in Derbyshire. Vehicles that have not been registered will be refused entry once enforcement begins.
The appeal comes as Derbyshire County Council continues its public consultation on proposals to close the tip as part of plans to save £360,000 a year.
Council leaders say the information gathered through the ANPR system will help build a clearer picture of how many people using the site are Derbyshire residents and how many are travelling from outside the county. That evidence will form part of the decision-making process alongside responses to the ongoing consultation.
Following the launch of the consultation, registrations from Glossop residents increased significantly. However, the council says around 65 per cent of vehicles currently visiting the site remain unregistered, suggesting a substantial number of users may be travelling from outside Derbyshire and therefore do not contribute to the county's council tax.
Councillor Carol Wood, Derbyshire County Council's Cabinet Member for Environment, said:
"We've been encouraging Derbyshire residents to register to use our sites over many months and now we're in a position to trial the new system at Glossop. It will give us a clearer picture of how many residents and non-residents are using the site, which is close to the county border with Tameside.
"I'd like to thank everyone who has taken the time to register so far and would urge residents who haven't yet done so to register as soon as possible to avoid getting caught out at the gate."
Registration is free, can be completed online or by calling 01629 533190. Each Derbyshire resident can register up to two vehicles.
Residents using a van for household waste must register each visit, with access granted for 24 hours. The measure is designed to discourage traders from using the sites free of charge. Commercial waste can instead be disposed of at designated recycling centres for a fee.
