Prolific shoplifter jailed

Raymond Skelly.

A prolific shoplifter has been jailed after breaching a court order banning him from entering certain shops.

Raymond Skelly, 47, was given a Criminal Behaviour Order in April 2025, prohibiting him from entering stores where he had previously been banned.

However, in February this year, Skelly was barred from a B&M store in Glossop,  and on 13th April he breached that order by entering the shop and stealing items including meat and butter worth around £100. Staff recognised him and he was arrested.

Skelly, of Greenbank, Hadfield, was later charged with theft and breaching a Criminal Behaviour Order. He admitted the offences when he appeared at Tameside Magistrates' Court on 17th April. He was jailed for 16 weeks.

Police also confirmed he had breached the conditions of his licence for previous offences, resulting in his recall to prison.

The Criminal Behaviour Order remains in place until April 2027. It bans Skelly from entering a number of shops, including Tesco and Boots in Hadfield, as well as the Co-op in Simmondley, and any other premises he is prohibited from visiting.

He is also required to leave any shop or commercial premises in the UK if asked to do so by staff.
