Whitfield St James’ CE (VC) Nursery and Primary School is supporting the work of the charity Silver Cord this December.
The children have been donating items for Christmas Day gift bags, which will be distributed to elderly people who may otherwise be alone.
Silver Cord works to “cherish the person – change the community” by reaching out to isolated individuals. On Christmas Day, volunteers from partner churches will deliver 140 meals and gift bags to people across the local area who will be spending the day on their own.
Pupils and families at Whitfield St James’ have been contributing to this initiative for several years, with the school community once again donating generously towards the Christmas Day gift bags. Donations this year include jams, hot water bottles, toiletries, sweets, shortbread biscuits, tins of soup, mince pies, chocolates, puzzle books, gloves, and socks!
Executive Headteacher Craig Woodward said:
“Supporting Silver Cord is a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to show kindness and compassion within our local community. Christmas can be a difficult time for some, and we are proud to be playing a small part in helping to bring comfort and joy on Christmas Day.”
The school hopes its donations will help make the gift bags feel personal and thoughtful, reminding recipients that they are valued and remembered.
This community outreach is just one example of the work Whitfield St James’ undertakes. The school hosts many fundraising events throughout the year to support the local community. If you would like to tour the school or enquire about Nursery or school places, please contact the school office on 01457 852427.
