Detectives are continuing their investigation after human remains were discovered close to the M67 in Tameside earlier this week.
Greater Manchester Police were called shortly after 11pm on Monday, August 3, after road workers carrying out routine maintenance found the body near a bridge between junctions 3 and 4 of the motorway.
The discovery led to the closure of part of the M67 while specialist officers carried out enquiries at the scene.
Police have now confirmed that a Home Office post-mortem examination has taken place, with further investigations continuing.
Officers say the body is that of a man believed to be aged between 20 and 28 years old, approximately 5ft 5in to 5ft 9in tall, of medium build. His ethnicity has not yet been established.
Detectives are continuing to work with specialist teams to determine how the man came to be at the location, establish the cause of his death and identify him so that his next of kin can be traced.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "We are continuing to work with specialist teams to understand the full circumstances behind how the man's body ended up by the bridge, how he died, and to locate next of kin to establish an identity."
