Old Glossop Band pay tribute to long-serving member

Old Glossop Band

Glossop Old Band has announced the death of one of its most cherished and longest-serving members, Hugh Cant, who dedicated more than six decades of his life to the band.

The band described Hugh as not only a talented musician, but a loyal friend, an irreplaceable presence, and a true pillar of the organisation. A statement written by former principal cornet player Dave Richardson remembers Hugh’s extraordinary contribution both musically and personally:

“It is with deepest sadness that Glossop Old band announce the passing of it's much loved and longest serving member Hugh Cant.

Hugh joined the band aged 8 and completed more than 60 years continuous service, remaining loyal to the band throughout.

He was a fine musician, initially on cornet and flugel horn, before a mid career move to Eb bass (tuba), on which he excelled. This move was the making of him as a top player and established him as a cornerstone of Glossop Old Band.

During his time with the band, he contributed enormously, helping them to secure Championship status. Hugh performed with the band at the most prestigious events including the All England Masters, The British Open and National Championships of Great Britain at the Royal Albert Hall (RAH). In addition to the RAH, he performed at other great venues including the King's Hall (Belle Vue), Manchester Free Trade Hall and the Symphony Hall Birmingham. A more than considerable achievement for a local town band.

In addition to his musical talent, Hugh had a great sense of humour, was extremely quick witted and a naturally funny guy! As a result, he was the band comic and entertainer, king of the one-liners and had a joke for every occasion. He often directed the singing on the band coach on the way home from our travels.

Hugh had a caring side too, always there to listen, or for a chat if you were going through difficult times.

RIP Hugh, we're missing you already.

Sincere condolences to his June, Ken and Tania, Julie and Andy and their respective families.

Love from all your friends at Glossop Old Band.”
