Nostalgia: Santa Claus steps into Christmas

Fifty years ago, Father Christmas drew a large number of people to Hayfield Parish Church's Christmas fair.

The event raised almost £200.

Opening the event was Mrs JF Statham, wife of the vicar of New Mills, who was introduced by the vicar of Hayfield, the Rev JF Jacques.

The vicar said that it was always a pleasant duty to preside at such an occasion.

He spoke about the importance of Christmas fairs, both to raise money for the church and other causes.

He welcomed Mrs Statham, who said it was just a year to the day since her husband had been inducted vicar of New Mills.

She said that all the stalls looked very attractive, and a lot of children were anxious to meet Father Christmas.

A great deal of hard work had gone into the fair, for which people had been working a long time.

Despite other stalls containing cakes, flowers, games, tombolas and hardware, Father Christmas proved the biggest attraction.
