Here's a reminder of the days when Glossop made gas and a number of homes used it for lighting, as well as heating and cooking.
There were still scores of homes without electricity and some streets in the 1950s only had gas lights.
Here is the ‘gasometer’ where the gas was stored before it was pumped to consumers.
It was ‘made’ at Glossop Gas Works on Arundel Street, which was closed around 60 years ago.
