Few shopfronts on Glossop High Street stop people in their tracks quite like Norris Floristry.
With its beautifully styled window displays featuring ever-changing seasonal arrangements, the award-winning master florist has become one of the town centre's most eye-catching businesses.
Behind the striking shopfront is a philosophy that extends beyond flowers. For owner Anja Norris, every bouquet, arrangement and installation is a carefully crafted story.
The award-winning florist, who trained in her native Germany 25 years ago, has spent decades honing her skills. She has built a reputation that has earned recognition far beyond Glossop, with design projects ranging from weddings and corporate events to television productions and prestigious RHS flower shows.

Anja and her team are members of the British Florist Association, while Anja herself is a Fellow of the Institute of Professional Florists. Together they continue to work on high-profile commissions:
"We've been fortunate to work on television projects and create installations for global brands" she said. "We've also competed and won at the Chelsea Flower Show. Anything to do with flowers, we're involved."
Despite that impressive portfolio, Anja remains passionate about serving customers in her hometown.
"During Covid we launched the business from a studio in Whaley Bridge” she explains. “Then we got the opportunity to move into our hometown of Glossop, and it felt like the perfect thing to do."
Alongside everyday bouquets, funeral tributes and wedding flowers, customers can browse a carefully selected range of houseplants, dried flowers, ceramics sourced from Europe, gifts and seasonal displays. Upstairs, a dedicated creative studio hosts workshops and provides space for larger commercial projects.

Anja believes it is the shop's unique approach to floristry that truly sets it apart. Rather than stocking large quantities of every flower and colour imaginable, Norris Floristry works around carefully planned seasonal palettes.
Flowers are imported directly from the Netherlands several times a week, ensuring customers receive blooms at their freshest.
"We create a curated colour scheme every week" Anja explained. “It allows us to choose flowers that are a little different from what you might find elsewhere, while also ensuring we're buying the best possible quality."
That approach also helps reduce waste, something Anja is particularly passionate about.
"We're dealing with nature. Flowers are perishable and we have a responsibility to respect that. By buying little and often, our stock doesn't sit around for long periods. We can maintain freshness while operating more sustainably."

The focus on quality, sustainability and longevity is central to everything the business does. Anja believes customers deserve flowers that continue to bring joy long after they leave the shop.
"If something doesn't perform as expected, we want people to come and tell us. We'll always put it right" she said. "We work very hard to maximise the lifespan of every arrangement, whether that's a birthday bouquet, flowers for a wedding or a sympathy tribute."
For Anja however, flowers represent something much deeper than simply looking beautiful. Every arrangement, she says, carries a story.
"It might be someone wanting to say thank you, cheer somebody up, celebrate an occasion or express sympathy. Our job is to capture that story and translate it into flowers."
She also believes every bouquet should continue revealing something new to the recipient over time.
"Whenever somebody looks at an arrangement, there should be something else to discover. It might be an unusual flower variety, a particular colour combination or simply watching the flowers open and mature.”

Rather than tightly packed bouquets where every stem competes for attention, Anja favours designs that allow flowers room to breathe, develop and reveal their individual character.
"Our work isn't rigid; it's mindful, considered and deliberate" she said. "We allow flowers the space to move and show their true beauty and full potential."
The same considered philosophy extends to customer service.
Anja sees part of her role as helping customers make informed decisions, even if that means steering them away from a particular choice.
"I believe in being transparent. If a flower isn't going to deliver what someone wants it to do, it's our responsibility as professionals to advise them and find a better solution."
For first-time visitors, Anja hopes the experience of entering the shop is memorable from the moment they step through the door.
"The thing people comment on most is the smell" she laughed. "I've gone completely nose blind to it now, but apparently it smells wonderful!"
More importantly, she hopes people feel welcome.
"It's a calm space. Somewhere you can have a relaxed look around, find inspiration and have a conversation. I hope when people come in, it's like receiving a warm, welcoming hug that smells like a flower shop."
It is a fitting description for a business built not on simply "throwing some flowers together", but on creativity, craftsmanship and a deep respect for the stories that connect people through life's most important moments.
Whether creating a joyful thank-you bouquet, designing a classic wedding installation or helping a family mark a difficult goodbye, Anja and her team approach every commission with the same care and attention to detail.
And judging by the growing reputation of Norris Floristry, locally, nationally and internationally, that thoughtful approach is continuing to bloom.
