No Glossop roads included in £3m county repair scheme

Glossop has been left out of a £3 million Derbyshire County Council pothole repair scheme despite the programme being based on roads suggested by local councillors.

The decision has raised questions about why the town’s worst-affected streets were passed over.

The scheme, which will see 19 residential roads resurfaced across Derbyshire from May 2026, was created after county councillors were invited to nominate their local roads in need of repair. The funding was made available through efficiency savings within the council’s highways service and sits alongside its wider £70 million capital programme.

Announcing the scheme, the council’s Cabinet Member for Potholes, Highways and Transport, Councillor Charlotte Hill, said the selected roads reflected priorities identified locally:

“I am pleased that we have been able to agree to resurface these residential roads. They reflect all areas of the county, and I am sure local residents will be pleased to hear that their street is on the list for repair.”

However, none of the roads nominated for resurfacing are in Glossop, despite the town having long-standing issues with potholes and road surface deterioration.

The full list of roads included in the £3m resurfacing scheme is as follows:

◾️ Upper Marehay Road, Ripley: Pargate Close to end

◾️ Loscoe Grange, Loscoe: A6007 to end (including cul-de-sac) Avenue, Shuttlewood: B6418 to end

◾️ Hawthorne Road, Pinxton: Church Street West to Pool Street

◾️ Cobnar Drive, Dunston: Dunston Lane to Cordwell Avenue

◾️ Hillman Drive, Staveley: Summerskill Green to Dade Avenue

◾️ Lansbury Avenue, Mastin Moor: A619 Worksop Road to Almond Crescent

◾️ Chatsworth Road (rear of properties), Rowsley

◾️ Brunswood Road, Matlock Bath: Holme Road to Holme Road

◾️ Wolds Rise, Matlock: Cavendish Road to Moorfields

◾️ Church Street, Tansley: A615 to Oaksedge Lane/Green Lane

◾️ Orchard Way, Sandiacre: Park Drive to No. 31

◾️ Grosvenor Avenue, Sawley: Wilmot Street to Draycott Road

◾️ Leicester Street, Long Eaton: Oakleys Road to Frisby Avenue

◾️ Western Lane, Buxworth: No. 24 to No. 124

◾️ Peak Road, New Mills: Ollersett Avenue to No. 86

◾️ Barnes Avenue, Dronfield Woodhouse: B6056 Stubley Lane to Barnes Lane

◾️ Kirkcroft Avenue, Killamarsh: Kirkcroft Lane into cul-de-sac

◾️ Oversetts Road, Swadlincote - Main Street to Fairfield Crescent

While towns and villages across the county appear on the list Glossop is absent, prompting questions about how the nomination process worked locally.

The Glossop Chronicle asked Derbyshire County Council whether Glossop’s county councillors nominated any roads for inclusion, and if so, why none were selected. In response, Councillor Hill said:

“We had roads suggested throughout the county, but as this is an additional scheme unfortunately it can only fund so many. The funding for this scheme was created by the service making savings, so these roads wouldn’t have been carried out this year, if it wasn't for us working more efficiently.

“All areas of the county will receive funding for resurfacing for roads and pavements from our main £70m capital programme.”

County councillor Jean Wharmby, who represents Glossop North, confirmed to the Glossop Chronicle that she had put forward a road for repair, saying:

“Unfortunately my suggestion of Dinting Road was not selected. I contacted the Derbyshire County Council officer to express my disappointment and request that the road be definitely included in the 2027/28 programme.

“Dinting Road is in desperate need of repair, with ongoing potholes, resurfacing problems and drainage issues. I have since received a response confirming that the road will be patched and inspected and placed on the 2027/28 list for consideration.”

The council did not clarify why the submission from the town was unsuccessful.

With residents continuing to raise concerns about road conditions, the absence of Glossop from a scheme explicitly built on councillor nominations is likely to leave many residents questioning how priorities were set - and when the town will see comparable investment.
