Community Speed Watch (CSW) is a national initiative that enables local residents to take an active role in improving road safety in their own neighbourhoods.
The scheme brings together volunteers and local police to monitor vehicle speeds in areas where speeding has been identified as a concern.
Trained volunteers use approved speed monitoring devices while working from safe, authorised locations. Wearing high-visibility clothing, they record details of vehicles exceeding the speed limit, including the speed, make, model and registration number. This information is then passed on to the police for follow-up action.
Rather than focusing on punishment, the main aim of Community Speed Watch is education and deterrence. Drivers reported through the scheme receive warning letters from the police, helping to raise awareness of their speed and encouraging safer driving habits. The initiative is often launched at the request of town or parish councils in response to concerns raised by local communities.
All volunteers receive training from the police before taking part, ensuring that monitoring is carried out safely and effectively. The scheme offers residents a practical way to make a positive difference and help reduce the risks associated with speeding traffic.
Anyone interested in getting involved can sign up by contacting their local Safer Neighbourhood Team or by emailing the Community Speed Watch team at AdminCSW@Derbyshire.Police.UK
