The Mayor of High Peak, Councillor Dom Elliott-Starkey, is set to take to the skies on Sunday 3rd August joining a brave team from Reuben’s Retreat for a fundraising skydive.
In his inaugural address earlier this year, Cllr Elliott-Starkey expressed his enthusiasm for championing the many organisations that make High Peak a vibrant and compassionate community. True to his word, he has wasted no time in giving his support to local causes and events.
“When I was first elected, I visited Reuben’s Retreat and was so impressed by the incredible staff, volunteers and facilities they have” the Mayor told us. “Their mission - to ensure every child experiences joy and creates lasting memories, no matter how short or challenging their life - deeply resonated with me. It was a visit that stayed with me and reminded me just how lucky I am, while also highlighting the remarkable light that shines through our community.”
As for the skydive itself, the Mayor admits it’s pushing him well beyond his comfort zone: “I thought it only fair, in the spirit of fundraising, to challenge myself. So here I am, preparing to leap from a plane! Rest assured, the mayoral chains will be staying firmly on the ground—I wouldn’t want them to weigh me down and make me fall any faster!”
Reuben’s Retreat was founded in August 2012, just two days after 23-month-old Reuben Graham tragically passed away. His mother, Nicola, launched the charity to support families navigating grief and uncertainty - those who have lost a child, and those caring for children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions. Through emotional and practical support, the charity walks beside families during their most difficult journeys.
