Following rumours that the café in the Glossop branch of Marks & Spencer was set to close, the company’s head office has confirmed the news.
A spokesperson told the Glossop Chronicle:
“We know many of our customers want to be able to shop a wider range of M&S Food. That’s why, after reviewing our Glossop store, we are re-purposing the café space to offer more products. We understand this will be disappointing news for some of our customers; however, our team will continue working hard to serve them in-store.”
The closure is part of a national plan affecting 11 cafés across smaller M&S food stores. The high street giant said the closures will impact fewer than 4 per cent of the group’s 316 food shops.
The café closures are part of a wider £300 million investment and store rotation programme, expected to significantly increase the number of M&S food halls nationwide. The company has said it plans to grow to around 420 food stores by the end of 2028.
The shake-up comes as M&S continues to recover financially after a major cyberattack in April, which forced the retailer to suspend online orders for six weeks and cost the company around £300 million.
