Scott Craig took a Mercedes car from Hadfield without the consent of the owner, a court heard.
The offence happened on July 5 this year with damage ultimately being caused to the vehicle before it was recovered.
Appearing before Stockport magistrates, the 33-year-old also admitted further charges of having no insurance cover and driving other than in accordance with his licence.
Magistrates ordered him to carry out 160 hours unpaid work, plus ordered him to pay compensation of £250, court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £95.
His address was given as Baxter Road in Sale.
