Keeping the music alive

A Glossop guitar technician is raising funds to help keep music alive for local students by providing new strings for instruments at Glossopdale School and Sixth Form.

Dave “Grizzly” Wharmby, who runs the business ‘Grizzly’s Pickin Fix’, has launched a community fundraiser to supply replacement strings for the school’s guitars and ukuleles.

The initiative aims to ensure students can continue to enjoy and progress in music without being held back by worn-out equipment. Grizzly said “Music plays such a huge role in young people’s lives. It builds confidence, encourages creativity, and gives students a positive outlet to express themselves. Unfortunately, something as simple as worn-out strings can make it difficult for them to fully enjoy and progress with their instruments.”

As part of the fundraising effort, everyone who donates will be entered into a prize draw, with one lucky supporter set to win a Yamaha FG acoustic guitar once the campaign concludes.

Grizzly said he hopes to raise as much as possible to support the school’s music department and help young people in Glossop continue to explore their creative talents, with a message to his supporters - “Thank you for helping keep music alive and accessible for the next generation.”

He has also thanked local businesses for their support, including a generous donation from High Peak Comps: “I’d just like to give a massive shout out and huge amount of gratitude to Alex at High Peak Comps for their amazing donation to the fundraiser. I’m humbled by the support” he said.
