It’s finally happening – work on the Mottram bypass is underway

High Peak’s MP Jon Pearce has welcomed news that work on the long awaited Mottram Bypass has begun.

Preliminary work on the £230m scheme, officially called the A57 link roads, has started with work to re-route utilities.

Jon Pearce said: “I am so pleased that after at least 50 years of campaigning by local people and politicians of all stripes work on the Mottram Bypass is finally underway.

“There inevitably will be some disruption. The National Highways compound off Hyde Road, near the petrol station, is being set up and additional units are expected to arrive at the site throughout the road’s construction.”

National Highways will close one lane of the A57 Hyde Road overnight from Tuesday to Friday this week while they create a new access point to their compound.

They will also close lanes at the Mottram roundabout from 8pm to 6am between Mon-Weds before setting up temporary lights around Woolley Bridge and the Gun Inn on Thursday and Friday respectively. There will then be a full closure of the A57 from Tues 3rd to Thurs 5th December between Back Moor and Stalybridge Road.

Mr Pearce added: “Whilst work commencing on the Mottram Bypass is welcome, once completed it will mainly benefit people living in Mottram. We still need a solution to the congestion and pollution in Tintwistle and Glossop. I will continue to work on this with the Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds, as the MP for Mottram, and local people.

This occasion is also noteworthy as it finally nails the lie that Labour did not back the bypass.

I’m sure many of my constituents will remember getting a ridiculous leaflet through their letterbox claiming that the general election was a referendum on the Mottram Bypass and we would scrap it if elected.

“Fortunately, most people saw it for what it was. And today we have done what we said we would do - delivering the Bypass.”
