A Hollingworth nursery has achieved an impressive turnaround, moving from an ‘Inadequate’ Ofsted rating in June to a glowing ‘Good’ report just three months later.

Thorncliffe Barn Nursery, based in the picturesque surroundings of Hollingworth, has been praised by inspectors for its caring staff, engaging activities, and nurturing environment. The latest Ofsted report highlights a complete transformation in the quality of care and education provided to local children.

Inspectors noted that “children eagerly enter this nursery. They are welcomed by the kind and nurturing staff, who spend time listening to children and parents.” The report goes on to commend how staff take time to understand each child’s needs and experiences, ensuring they receive “appropriate and safe care.”

A key strength identified in the inspection was the nursery’s creative and child-led approach to learning. Staff draw inspiration from children’s interests, for example, encouraging them to collect natural items such as leaves and insects on their way to nursery. These items are later used in art activities, helping children expand their vocabulary with descriptive words like ‘spiky’ and ‘crunchy’.

Inspectors also praised the nursery’s focus on personal development and behaviour. “Overall, behaviour is good,” the report states. “Children demonstrate good manners, using ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ regularly. Staff supervise children well and help them to express their feelings and resolve conflicts.”

The nursery’s rural setting was described as another key asset, offering large outdoor spaces where children can “run, climb and balance.” Staff use these opportunities to help children develop vital physical and social skills, preparing them for their eventual move to school.

Parents and visitors have also praised the nursery’s warm and welcoming atmosphere. The staff were described as “extremely friendly and approachable,” creating a setting where both children and families feel supported and valued.

The rapid improvement from ‘Inadequate’ to ‘Good’ is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Thorncliffe Barn team, who have clearly taken feedback on board and transformed their practice in a matter of months.
