High Peak golfer to take on the world's best

A High Peak golfer has earned a spot at one of the most prestigious tournaments on the planet.

George Bloor, from Buxton, will live every golfer's dream next week when he takes part in The Open Championship, which gets underway on Thursday (July 17) at Royal Portrush, Northern Ireland.

The 29-year-old secured his place in the world’s oldest golf tournament earlier this month after recording successive rounds of 69 in Final Qualifying at West Lancashire, picking up one of five available spots.

Initially, it looked as if he might have to go into a five-man play-off, but a crucial birdie at the 16th and two closing pars sealed his qualification.

The Buxton resident - who is currently ranked 825th in the world - competes on the second tier HotelPlanner Tour, and is a member at Cavendish Golf club in his hometown, which was designed by the legendary Alister MacKenzie, the creator of Augusta National.

Bloor turned pro back in 2019, but this will be his debut in the competition, and he admits he still hasn’t processed the achievement:

“It’s still not sunk in, this is a childhood dream,” said Bloor ahead of the event.

“The day [at West Lancashire] was really special, I had a lot of my family members there and to share it with them it was quite emotional.

“Golf can be a rollercoaster ride, there are a lot of ups and downs and to have such a huge up with friends and family around was really special.”

To add to the excitement, in Wednesday’s practice round - which takes place ahead of the main event - Bloor will be teeing off alongside none other than world number one Scottie Scheffler.

"I saw there was a slot, and I was like he’s the world number one, that’s an opportunity I really want to take,” said the 29-year-old.

“I don’t know if some people would shy away from it, but I just want to jump straight in.

“Playing with him on the Wednesday will give me some feelings that I’ve never felt before, and then hopefully it will make Thursday feel more comfortable.

“I know I am going to be super excited and there’s so much that goes on with it that’s a bit like a circus, but at the same time I am serious about going there to compete and maximising my performance.

“I feel like I am in a good place mentally and the game is trending nicely. I am really pleased with my prep and the way things are going at the moment.”

The 153rd edition of The Open will run from Thursday July 17 to Sunday July 20.
