Tintwistle Labour councillor Rob Baker is lacing up his walking boots this September, taking on a 60-mile challenge in aid of mental health charity MIND.
Cllr Baker, who also serves as an Assistant Executive Member generally working on Parks Development and supporting the various friends groups in the High Peak, said the cause is close to his heart.
“I’m walking 60 miles in September in aid of the charity MIND, to raise money for those who need someone to walk alongside them, just as someone once walked alongside me when I was struggling” he explained. “Some days I still struggle with anxiety, compulsions and intrusive thoughts, but thanks to the help I received I handle them differently now. I face them with optimism and determination to overcome them. Not all that long ago that seemed impossible.”
On his donation page he explains: “Every step is for someone who feels they’ve run out of options. Right now, MIND’s phone lines are the busiest they’ve ever been. In the UK, one in four of us will face a mental health problem this year, yet too many still wait in silence. MIND is often their only lifeline - on the phone, in local communities and fighting for change so no one is left behind.”
Cllr Baker is taking the challenge in his stride, braving the weather and the hills of Glossopdale, sometimes accompanied by his dog and his young son James. He has been sharing updates of his routes, which include admiring the views during woodland walks and more strenuous treks through Hadfield and Glossop - recently completing a six-mile circuit that took in Howard Park and Bankswood Park.
He hopes local residents will get behind his efforts and support the cause. Donations can be made via his fundraising page: justgiving.com/fundraising/Rob1755091894449
