Glossopdale Churches Together will once again be supporting Christian Aid Week, taking place from 10th to 16th May.
Christian Aid was founded in 1945 in the aftermath of the Second World War, when churches of different denominations came together to respond to the refugee crisis and widespread poverty in Europe. Today, the organisation continues to provide vital support during humanitarian emergencies and works with local partners around the world to tackle injustice and poverty, helping people of all faiths and none.
This year’s appeal highlights work in Nairobi, Kenya, where Christian Aid partners with the charity ‘Beacon of Hope’. Kenya has a growing debt burden, driven by high interest rates set by international private lenders. Public spending has been falling, making life more difficult for many people. More than a third of the population is undernourished, with particular devastating effects for children
In Nairobi, more than half the population live in semi-permanent homes. ‘Beacon of Hope’ is supporting communities in areas such as Dagoretti, by teaching people innovative techniques that allow them to grow crops in small urban spaces near their homes. These methods help them feed themselves and generate extra income by selling surplus produce locally.
Alongside collections in local churches, volunteers will be delivering donation envelopes to homes across Glossopdale. This year, residents are encouraged to bring their donations directly back to Central Methodist Church, rather than waiting for collection, allowing volunteers to reach more homes. An online donation page has also been set up for convenience. Use the QR code or visit: https://caw.christianaid.org.uk/fundraiser-2026/glossopdale-churches-together
A number of fundraising events will take place during Christian Aid Week:
- Sunday 10th May 11am-12 noon: Craft Stall at Central Methodist Church (following the morning service)
- Tuesday 12th May from 2pm: Tea and Coffee Afternoon at All Saints’ Parish Church, Old Glossop.
- Saturday 16th May 10am-12 noon: Coffee Morning with cakes, books and bric-a-brac at Central Methodist Church.
Last year, the appeal raised just over £3,500, and organisers are hopeful of surpassing that total this year.
Glossopdale Churches Together would like to thank all those who contributed previously and look forward to the continued support of local residents.
