Following the hottest May ever recorded in the UK, Glossopdale residents are being invited to watch a new film highlighting the growing climate and nature crisis and encouraging action to address it.
The ‘People's Emergency Briefing’ is being screened at more than 1,000 venues across the country by community groups, trade unions, universities and churches. The 45-minute film brings together academics and experts in climate science, nature, health, food production and security to examine the challenges posed by climate change and the loss of biodiversity.
The film features speeches delivered at a meeting in Westminster last November, which MPs from across the political spectrum were invited to attend, although many didn’t, alongside contributions from members of the public reflecting on the evidence presented and discussing what action can be taken.
Local organisers say the climate and nature crisis poses significant risks to food security, public health and wellbeing, and that while progress has been made in recent years, much more needs to be done to address the challenges ahead, and sooner. They also call for the government to deliver a national educational campaign.
Residents will have the opportunity to watch the film at Glossop Labour Club on Chapel Street on Saturday 13th June at 4pm. Organisers note that the club is an independent venue and is not affiliated with the Labour Party.
High Peak Green New Deal Co-ordinator Linda Walker attended a screening of the film in Buxton and is encouraging others to see it.
"The message from the experts is stark" she said. "But they also make clear that the dangerous trajectory we are on can be changed with urgent action from our politicians.
"Chris Packham interviews a variety of people about their responses to what they have heard – including Jennifer Saunders and Deborah Meaden of Dragon's Den – and they all express a mixture of shock at the size of the problem we face, and determination that we can and must do something about it.
"Watching the film with other people gives everyone a chance to talk about their feelings and discuss what we can do as individuals and collectively."
