Glossop pet owner's dogged determination for Bowel Cancer UK

Sam Pescott with her dog Podrick

Bowl cancer survivor Sam Pescott is taking part in the charity’s Walkies Together challenge by walking 44 miles with her adopted dog Podrick throughout October.

Sam's challenge symbolises the 44,000 people diagnosed with bowel cancer in the UK each year.

All funds raised will go towards supporting Bowel Cancer UK’s work to save lives and improve the quality of life of everyone affected by bowel cancer.

Sam said: “After an IIH diagnosis, I underwent many investigations which ultimately resulted in a diagnosis of bowel cancer in October last year.

"A few weeks later I had my surgery – a right hemicolectomy. What a rollercoaster! Thankfully it was caught early, and no further treatment was needed.

“This challenge is to mark the one-year anniversary of the diagnosis, surgery and journey my loved ones and I have taken. Plus, who can resist dogs wearing bandanas?!”

Bowel Cancer UK invited dog walkers to take on their Walkies Together challenge in October, committing to a minimum fundraising target of £150.

People can take on 44 miles or their own challenge, idea anytime between Wednesday 1 and Friday 31 October. Whatever they choose to do, they are helping to stop people dying of bowel cancer by raising much-needed funds for vital services and lifesaving research.

Vicky Martin, Community Fundraising Manager for Bowel Cancer UK, said: "We’re incredibly grateful to Sam and her dog Podrick for taking on our Walkies Together challenge.

"Every year, 44,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with bowel cancer, making it the UK's fourth most common cancer. The money Sam will raise will help us continue to raise awareness of the disease and its symptoms, provide expert information and support to patients and their families, fund vital research, and campaign for early diagnosis and access to best treatment and care.

"We hope that Sam knows the difference that her support will make. Every walk she and Podrick take will help our work towards a future where nobody dies of bowel cancer.”
