Glossop Cinema Club awarded national bursary

Matthew Miller with Glossop Cinema Club Founder Owain Paciuszko.

The national charity for the support and development of community cinema, ‘Cinema For All’, has included local pop-up community cinema ‘Glossop Cinema Club’ into their annual ‘Glow’ programme.

The programme is a £300 bursary and coaching scheme designed to help top up the skills and knowledge of community cinemas.

Founded by local filmmaker Owain Paciuszko in Summer 2024, Glossop Cinema Club began with a sold-out screening of cult 90s film ‘Freaked’. The audience was not only treated to the film, but also intros from cast and crew, quirky games and prizes, and short films.

Since then, Glossop Cinema Club has shown 20 films, from classics such as ‘The Wicker Man’ and ‘Gremlins’, to cult favourites including ‘Phantom of the Paradise’ and ‘Tank Girl’. They also brought Scarred For Life’s ‘Folk Horror’ live show to the Partington Theatre last April.

Founder Owain Paciuszko told us: “I wanted to start Glossop Cinema Club in part to bring some stranger cinematic offerings to Glossop, as a compliment to our other fantastic community cinemas; Peak Film Society and Red Film Club. But also as a way to find like-minded folks interested in cult movies, and filmmaking in general. Alongside our film screenings we’re hoping to foster community filmmaking, and I’ve already worked with some people on film projects who I met through Glossop Cinema Club!”

Glossop resident Matthew Miller has recently joined the team, saying; “Being an introvert, I was nervous to go at first, but soon settled in and found that I was in for something special. Glossop Cinema Club has become a safe space to look forward to each month. I’ve discovered a wonderful community of amazing fellow film enthusiasts.”

With the support of Cinema For All, Glossop Cinema Club is now looking to reach more people, growing its audiences, as well as bring in more volunteers and collaborators to help shape future events and programming.

Upcoming events include a 20th anniversary screening of Shane Meadows’ award-winning feature ‘This Is England’ which was filmed around Derbyshire, as Glossop Cinema Club are always keen to showcase local filmmaking talent.

Matthew continues, “For the past year and a half, Glossop Cinema Club has gathered a following that continues to grow steadily, providing Glossop and the whole of the High Peak District with experiences outside of the mainstream norm.”

Cinema For All’s Glow programme is funded by the BFI, awarding funds from the National Lottery.
